Kung Fu Training Schools
in Foshan |
|
|
Foshan City in Guangdong Province is widely regarded
as the modern home of Kung Fu worldwide, although the
Shaolin Temple in Fujian Province is equally famous
but offers far fewer training opportunities for dedicated
practitioners.
Foshan is home to Ip Man and
Wing Chun style 'Gongfu', whose legacy
lives on today with his eldest son Ip Chun and two remaining
students Lun Gai and Gwok Fu. These three elderly gentlemen
have handed down Ip Man's legacy to a new generation
of Sifu (Master's) who continue Wing Chun training at
various schools in Foshan today. However Bruce Lee,
Ip Man's most famous student brought Kung Fu to the
west.
Wong Fei Hong is also a son of Foshan
who lived in Xi Qiao (Buddha Mountain) which is twenty
minutes to the west. Today Xi Qiao offers a complex
of Buddhist and Kung Fu schools and museums dedicated
to Wong Fei Hong and his disciples, where you can find
Hun Ga and Wushu practiced
daily in several clubs. |

Gwok Fu is a regular visitor and guiding influence,
although both Lun Gai and Ip Chun have visited

which offers instruction in Cantonese. However,
one of the trainers speaks good English.
Training is offered 6 days per week with two x
2 hour sessions per day. The current cost (August
2011) is Y750 RMB for a 2-month course. 1- to
- 1 training is also available at a cost of Y100
per hour.
When we spoke to Sifu Liang he was pleased to
offer additional training in other disciplines
apart from 'Wing Chun boxing' such as: knives,
long pole, etc; which are either offered in house,
or via his wide network of friends and contacts.
More importantly he came across as being a very
nice person who was eager to help foreign students
achieve their desires. |

Other
There are many other Kung Fu schools in Foshan, both
large and small; and given to different styles of Kung
Fu. There are also Kung Fu working museums and memorial
halls. The most publicised are:
• Huang
Fei Hong Memorial Hall (Zumiao - Inside the Ancestral
Temple)
• Ip Man Memorial Hall (Zumiao - Inside the Ancestral
Temple)
• The former residence of Bruce Lee (Shunde Daliang),
a museum that also features traditional 'Bone Setting'
displays of Chinese medicine.
Ten Tigers of Canton (Quangdong) 廣東十虎
The Ten Tigers of Canton or Ten Tigers of Guangdong
refer to a group of ten Chinese martial artists from
Guangdong (Canton), China, who lived during the late
Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). They were said to be the
best fighters in southern China at that time. Much
of their existence has been embellished by folk legends
and stories passed down from generation to generation.
The Ten Tigers of Canton traced their martial arts
lineage to the southern Shaolin Monastery at the Jiulian
Mountains in present-day Fujian province. The southern
Shaolin is a branch of the (more famous) main Shaolin
Monastery on Mount Song in Henan province. Hence,
the Ten Tigers' martial arts styles resemble those
of Shaolin Kung Fu.
The 10 Tigers are:
Wong Yan-lam - Lama Fist
Wong Ching-ho - Nine Dragon Fist
Sou Hak-fu (Black Tiger) - Iron Gravel Palm
Wong Kei-ying (Father of Wong Fei Hung) - Hung Boxing,
Shadowless Kick
Lai Yan-chiu - 7 Star Fist
So Chan (Beggar So) - Drunken Fist
Leung Kwan (Iron Bridge Three) - Iron Wire Fist
Chan Cheung-tai - Eagle Claw
Tam Chai-kwan - Crane Sun Fist
Chow Tai (Iron Head Chow) - Soft Palm, BaQua Staff

XiQiao is perhaps the most significant Pearl in this
vast River Delta. It is a renowned scenic spot, Buddhist
temple complex, and home to everything that embodies
ultimate and state of the arts Chinese Kung Fu. Teachings
are based upon 'HuangFeiHong' (Wong Fei Hung in Cantonese,
versions) style 'Gongfu'. Huang Fei Hong came to Foshan
as a young boy, with his Father and other disciples
as they fled Imperial persecution from the Shaolin Temple
in neighbouring Fujian Province. They settled in Nanhai
(The name of Foshan City District at that time), and

Anglicisation
Wing Chun (Mainland Cantonese), Wing Tsun (Hong Kong
Cantonese) and Yong Chun (Mandarin) all mean the same
thing, simply the spelling is different. The same holds
true for many related terms and names of people, for
instance Yip Man is the Hong Kong Cantonese anglicisation.
We have used Mainland Cantonese, as this is what everybody
here speaks. |
