Cantaloupe
Melon or Ha Ma Gwa |
|
This is a Chinese version of the cantaloupe
melon and closer in size and shape to a Persian Melon.
It is common in all Chinese wet markets, whilst some
supermarkets will stock these and also the standard
cantaloupe type. |

Buying
These are about 1 foot long by 6 inches wide and
have a wrinkly skin. Choose heavy ones that have
a sweet scent and are soft near the flower end.
They can keep for several weeks in the fridge,
but must be used within days once cut open
Pictured is one my wife bought and it was sweet
and delicious. You may be interested to know she
paid ¥3.5 for it, or about 30 British pence
(October 2010)
Eat as you would any melon - by removing the seeds
and eating the internal flesh. |

Recipes
Ha Ma Gwa should be eaten fresh and uncooked, however
as with any Chinese food, they can be cooked. I think
this is a waste, but if you do want to do something
with them other than perhaps balls in a fruit salad,
then here are some recipes they could be substituted
in:
Notable recipes include:
* Mango Soup
* Fan Shei Soup
